The Communication Turnaround Program

Know your communication strengths. Fix your gaps.

The framework

5 dimensions. 1 personalized plan.

Great communication at work isn't one skill. It's five:

1
Attunement — Who am I talking to?
2
Substance — What is actually worth saying?
3
Structure — How should I organize it?
4
Language — How should I phrase it?
5
Delivery — How should I express it?
1

Diagnose the Situation

  • 1Hr live session

First, we define what "better" actually means for you.

  • Maybe you want to sound more senior.
  • Maybe you need to lead meetings more effectively.
  • Maybe you want more trust from leadership.
  • Maybe you need to become more persuasive.

We turn that vague problem into one concrete communication outcome.

Then we identify your unique Communication Profile.

Through live scenarios, improvisation, and unexpected prompts, I observe how you naturally use the five dimensions, especially when you don't have time to prepare.

2

Build Your Plan

  • Personally developed by Jonathan, for you

I go through the five dimensions one by one and assess where you are today relative to the level you need to reach your goal.

I identify:

  • Your strengths — what to keep leaning into
  • Your gaps — what's getting in your way
  • Your priorities — what will make the biggest difference

Then I build your personalized Communication Improvement Plan.

It includes the specific skills to work on, resources to use, and exercises to practice between sessions.

You don't need to become a perfect communicator.

You need to become better at the things that matter for the situations you care about.

3

Practice

  • Self-practice exercises. Our plan gives you a structured way to practice on your own, focused on the specific skills you need to improve.
  • Four 30-minute sessions. We practice the situations that actually matter to you:
  • The update to leadership.
  • The meeting where you need to speak up.
  • The presentation where you need to persuade.
  • The 1:1 where you make important ask.
  • Q&A support. Get direct feedback and answers to questions that come up as you put your plan into practice.
What you leave with

By the end of the program, you'll know:

  • Your current level of communication.
  • Your communication gaps.
  • What you need to change.
  • How to keep improving.

Your communication will finally match the level of your thinking.

Case Studies

People who were exactly where you are

Diagnosed: Substance The pain

Menglu had been doing tech lead work for a while without the tech lead title. She wanted her manager to promote her. But she was worried asking would make her look selfish.

What we found

Menglu had positioned her promotion request as what she wanted, but her manager didn't care about that. He cared about making his team perform well. That was why her previous attempts had ended in silence.

What changed

We rebuilt her case around her contribution. She was already doing the job. Not having the title was lowering her ability to influence senior stakeholders, which was stopping her from helping the team perform well. Together, we made her resulting promotion to tech lead an inevitable next step.

Diagnosed: Delivery The pain

Mike joined a senior leadership role in a high-profile AI business unit at a Fortune 500 company, where the stakeholders he would be leading were 10 years older. Naturally, he felt like an imposter every time he spoke.

What we found

Mike was trying to be faster in his second language. That was never going to happen. I wasn't going to promise better English overnight. Instead, we were going to improve how he spoke, to bring out his executive presence.

What changed

We identified his unique communication style and leaned into it. We retrained how he speaks from voice to body language to structure and content. He developed true confidence from the outside in, by selecting powerful speaking behaviors which reinforced his inner confidence.

Diagnosed: Attunement The pain

Ten years on one team, and still the analytical work she desperately wanted had gone to everyone else. Keyin kept asking for a way in, over and over, and it went nowhere.

What we found

Keyin assumed the worst: that her manager thought she wasn't ready. But Keyin wasn't being left out because of incompetence. It was the opposite: She was so good at the operational work that her manager couldn't afford to have her do anything else.

What changed

Keyin recognized her manager's anxiety and shifted her communication habits, coming to the table as a partner instead of an employee. She helped her manager reprioritize her work and redefine her scope, which opened up the opportunies she needed.

Meet Your Coach

 Jonathan Li

Career Coach & Former Leader @ Shopify

"Storytelling was my edge. At 10, I won a nationally-televised English language competition and was interviewed by CBC as the youngest contestant. In high school, I went on to win national presentation championships twice.

In the workplace, telling stories for disruptors like Uber and Shopify, I learned that talent alone isn’t enough. Visibility is built through communication. I grew into leadership by telling the right stories: for my company, for my team, and for myself.

Since 2017, I’ve coached Chinese professionals navigating Western workplaces, reaching over 200,000 followers along the way. My philosophy is simple: if you don’t know how to tell your story, you won’t be seen; no matter how capable you are."
